San Diego City Add-On

With nearly perfect weather every day of the year, there are endless activities and places to visit in San Diego which is steeped in history (by American standards). Some of the original missions are still there as well as the Old Town, site of the original city centre. Located just outside the downtown city centre (10 minutes by car) the Old Town offers a uniquely Spanish/Mexican feel with authentic Mexican food, live music and delicious margaritas. Olive oil tasting and authentic wares of the region are tendered in the little shops here and you can browse while exploring the beautiful walkways, bougainvillaea and cascading fountains.

San Diego offers a trolley bus tour, which is excellent and great value for money for a family day out. Taking you through downtown you will see the famous Del Hotel where "Some Like It Hot" was filmed with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon on Coronado Island. It continues on all the way to where Tom Cruise sat in the piano bar in Top Gun, and everywhere in between. You can stop off and get on at as many locations as you choose: Our suggestion would be to stop for lunch on the waterfront at Sea Port Village or The Fish Market restaurant serving local fish dishes, conveniently located next to the US Midway, an American seaworthy military vessel open for tours (tickets need to be purchased in advance).

Further north is San Diego's La Jolla, considered "the jewel of California" This fashionable town is where you will find designer shops within walking distance of some of San Diego's elite hotels, some offering spectacular ocean views. Stroll down to many of the fabulous restaurants as well as to the beaches, caves and coves where you will see sea lions playing in the surf most of the year round.
