With goodie bags stuffed with incredible prizes on their way, it's time to find out the winners of the 2023/24 Ski Safari Customer Photo Competition as we count down our top 10 pictures from the season, chosen by our team.
It's been another stellar year of winter snaps submitted by our customers. This season we put out the call for photos that tell a story - beginners discovering a love for the mountains, unreal powder days in the backcountry, picture-postcard scenery and unique winter adventures like heli-skiing, Northern Lights spotting and fjord cruising. And, a good old-fashioned ski shot!
As a team, we had great fun looking through and voting for our favourites. All of the brilliant submissions reminded us why we love doing what we do.
After three intense rounds of voting across every department from sales to management, we have our top 10 entries and the all-important top three below.
10. 📷: Simon Pattison
📌: Gausta, Norway
A trip to the mountains isn't all about spending every minute possible on the slopes, it's about relaxing and experiencing something new - you're on holiday after all! That's why our team loved Simon capturing the moment before taking a dip into the frozen lake at 4* Gaustablikk Fjellresort. It's a picturesque spot in Gausta overlooking the iconic Gaustatoppen mountain. Whilst it may look chilly, there's a floating sauna to warm up in directly behind!
9. 📷: Matt Cobden
📌: Niseko, Japan
Matt's unique entry from Niseko immediately caught our team's attention. Not only did it capture the resort's world-class tree runs, the 360 degree camera added some artistic flair.
8. 📸: Paul Radford
📌: Gausta, Norway
Another nomination from our newest resort, Gausta. The views in the photo are breathtaking and Paul's son, James, looks like he's having the time of his life! We love to see our customers enjoying the mountains, which is another reason why this photo had to make it into our top 10!
7. 📸: Jacqui Skoyles
📌: Niseko, Japan
Last year, Jacqui placed 10th in our photo competition with a photo of heli-skiing in Canada. This year, she's done even better! Our team always love a mid-air skiing action shot! What set Jacqui's photo apart is the outstanding backdrop of Mt. Yotei on a beautiful day in Niseko.
6. 📸: Nevil Phillips
📌: Tromsø, Norway
The authenticity of this striking photo sparked a huge debate in our office. We can confirm that it's 100% real and a shining example of why we always suggest adding a city break to a skiing holiday. After their time exploring the slopes at Geilo, Nevil and his family travelled to the Arctic city of Tromsø where they enjoyed a northern lights tour - which certainly delivered the goods!
5. 📸: Nevil Phillips
📌: Tromsø, Norway
Another entry from the Phillips family making our top ten! If these photos aren't enough to convince you to add a trip to Tromø whilst you're in Norway, we're not sure what will. Seeing the Northern Lights is magical enough, but then going on to spot Orcas in the fjords is the cherry on top!
4. 📸: Pamela Owens
📌: Trysil, Norway
A very arty and unique photo coming from Trysil in January this year. Pamela captured this icy scene whilst skiing with her family and has narrowly missed out on placing in the top three!
3. 📸: Lisa Wartnaby 🥉
📌: Panorama, Canada
As we mentioned in the photo competition description this year "There's nothing wrong with a classic ski shot!", and Lisa's simple but epic photo from Panorama is a true testament to that by coming in third place.
2. 📸: Anthony West 🥈
📌: Trysil, Norway
We love skiing as much as our customers, and it brings us true joy when we get photos showing they maximised their skiing time into the evening. Anthony captured this in Trysil. A resort that offers night skiing until 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Anthony had this to say about his photo:
"We adore Trysil. This was our third visit, and the second that spanned the Christmas / New Year holidays. It was the first time we'd had clear skies with a full moon, and when you are in a picturesque place with picturesque conditions it's hard not to take a good photo.
Fingers crossed that we are just as lucky on our next visit."
1. 📸: Ian Ellis 🥇
📌: Myrkdalen, Norway
Our team believed Ian captured a lot of the ingredients that make a holiday in the mountains so special: spectacular rugged scenery, plenty of snow and empty, well-groomed slopes.
We asked Ian about his experience of Myrkdalen and what inspired him to capture the peaceful moment on the piste.
"Placing first was very unexpected news for a less than amateur photographer and taken with my phone with my son in the foreground. The stunning scenery in Myrkdalen and the weather made it worthwhile getting the first lift of the morning to the top of the mountain to sit on the deserted slopes and take in the scenery and sunrise. We were lucky enough that this was an almost daily event with a choice of cruising on freshly groomed runs or through powder stashes before stopping at the mid-station cafe for cake and hot chocolate."
As you can see, Mykdalen is still a relatively undiscovered resort. the snow-sure and diverse terrain make it a fantastic resort for beginners and experts alike. if you're yet to experience a skiing holiday in Norway, Myrkdalen is a great place to start!
Congratulations, Ian - we hope you enjoy your new GoPro camera, Dakine Split Roller and other goodies!
