It is best known for its colourful harbourside, the Bryggen, one of the most photographed areas of the city and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is full of characterful timber-clad buildings and historic cobbled streets, linking its seafaring past to the present day. Even today Bergen remains an important Norwegian port with seafood at the heart of its culture.
The Bergen Railway Line conveniently connects the city to the capital Oslo. It is one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world - travelling past fjords and across Europe's largest mountain plateau. The ski resorts of Voss and Geilo are directly on the line making a ski and city break a great option with the rail journey as one of the highlights. Our Fjords and Mountains Ski Safari has a suggested itinerary to make the most of your stay.
"This coastal city, famous for its harbourside, is the perfect gateway to the mountains. Located at the start of the spectacular Bergen Railway which stops at the ski resorts of Voss and Geilo. Bergen is a must-do stopover for ski holidays here."
