The 'Aurora' part of our Ski & Aurora Explorer Ski Safari, Tromsø offers the perfect opportunity to combine this stunning phenomenon with an exciting and unusual city stay - all as part of a ski holiday!
For the most magical experience, we recommend booking a trip with Aurora Cruise Tromsø. Leave the city's light pollution behind and take a boat out into the calm surrounding water. The trip runs every evening from November through to the end of March, starting at 6.45pm for three or four hours.
Your boat, the Aurora Explorer, allows views from the deck or a heated lounge, not just of the northern lights, but also taking in the beautiful city of Tromsø and the surrounding mountains and fjords. The knowledgeable guide on board will provide information on aurora borealis, the areas you visit and anything else you encounter. The heated lounge makes for a comfortable few hours and there is a kiosk on board where you can purchase hot meals, snacks and drinks.
If you're short on time or don't fancy being out on the water, there are other options for viewing the aurora light show from the city, we've highlighted a couple of them below.
The northern lights aren't the only reason to visit Tromsø. An oasis in the Arctic wilderness, it's a major cultural hub where the sun never rises above the horizon during winter. The culture is both modern and traditional with an engaging music and festival scene, a cuisine rich in local produce and strong ties to its heritage in the Sami reindeer herders.
This experience is the perfect partner to Trysil, but Geilo, Norefjell and Stöten all work just as well or you could even visit more than one resort. We recommend spending five days skiing and three days sightseeing for the ideal balance of adrenaline and wonder.
"Tromsø’s mild coastal climate, due to the Gulf Stream and well-developed city, makes it an excellent base in the Arctic to enjoy a wide range of winter activities on land and water. Located in the northern auroral zone, it’s well-placed for frequent displays of the northern lights."
